The technology entrepreneur and founder of the African Science Academy Tom Ilube says Ghana is the easiest place to work in Africa.
Ilube said he is sometimes puzzled “when I hear occasionally Ghanaians complaining about things”.
The founder of the African Science Academy was speaking to Nana Yaa Mensah on Sunday Night on Asaase 99.5 in Accra.
“Building a school and creating a school this far away [he is based in the UK], I have to rely on people to run the project for me and I have to know that I’m in a system that will work well,” he said.
“Actually that’s why I’m in Ghana. Because when we did these summer schools in different parts of Africa, what I found was that Ghana was the easiest place to work in, to get things done and to make things happen.
“And it always puzzles me when I hear occasionally Ghanaians complaining about things. I think to myself, ‘That’s just because you [Ghanaians] have not tried to do things in other countries,” Ilube said.
“For me, it works [here]; I have created a school … and raised funds that I’m not sure that I could do in some other countries. So that’s why we are here,” he added.
Africa’s Stem drive
Ilube has been powering up Africa’s drive to build on its science, technology, engineering and maths (Stem) skills base.
Having established the African Science Academy in Ghana in 2016, Tom has educated more than 100 gifted young women from 14 countries across Africa at the school, developing their potential as Africa’s future Stem leaders.
The facility is the continent’s first all-girls science and maths senior school and receives about a thousand applications across Africa every year for just 50 places on its intensive study course.
